　1996年、私の初の日本訪問は、作品Women En Large中の１２点が東京で展示されたときだった。東京都写真美術館で開催されたその展覧会は、『ジェンダー――記憶の淵から』と題され、フェミニスト作品展として画期的なものだった。そこで実にさまざまなグループの人々と出会い、そこからすぐに日本社会の「均質性」という支配的な理解のパラダイムに疑いを抱くようになった。このときの最初の観察から始まって、7年のあいだに数度の日本訪問でフェミニストや活動家たちとのコラボレーションを行なうなかで、プロジェクトWomen of Japan （『日本の女性』）が生まれた。

　これらの視覚イメージが示すのは、さまざまな階級、体格、身体能力、背景・出自の女性たちの美とパワーである。 美しいのは誰か、それを決めるのは誰かについての、日本とアメリカの基準を大きく越えでるイメージだ。このシリーズには、従来から日本女性とされてきた人、被差別部落の女性、在日韓国人女性、沖縄女性、アイヌ女性、そして日本に暮らしてはいるが一般には「日本の女性ではない」とされる女性たちだ。
 

The first time I traveled to Japan was in 1996, when 12 of my photographs from Women En Large were included in the groundbreaking feminist exhibit, Gender: Beyond Memory, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography (now renamed Tokyo Photographic Art Museum). Because I met a clearly varied group of people, I quickly began doubting the dominant paradigm of Japanese “homogeneity.” Over time, these first observations evolved into this project. I made the work while visiting Japan over a seven-year period, in collaboration with feminists and activists.
 
The images show the beauty and power of women of different classes, sizes, physical abilities and backgrounds, extending both Japanese and US standards of who is beautiful and who matters. The series includes photographs of women who are traditionally Japanese, Buraku, Korean residents, Okinawans, Ainu and other women who live in Japan but might be stereotypically described as "not Japanese."
